Note From Me: Hidden Behind the Milk
I had trouble keeping up with our yogurt needs this summer. With two young men weight-lifting and two adults counting macros living here, the high-protein greek yogurt I bought each week was in high demand.
Have you seen the yogurt shelves at the grocery store lately? The options are endless. You can find full-fat or fat-free yogurt, yogurt with sugar sprinkles or no sugar at all. And so much protein is stuffed into these plastic containers! You can find 12 grams, 15 grams, 21 grams, or even 31 grams per serving.
Since I have been strength training and trying to increase my own protein intake, I was buying tubs of the high protein stuff. A side serving of greek yogurt can be a simple way to add significant grams to any meal.
But every time I bought a certain brand of extra-high-protein yogurt that I preferred, I would find the tub almost empty in the fridge not even two days later.
But I got savvy.
I asked Rafe his favorite brand of yogurt and then bought tons of it. The refrigerator was positively bursting with serving-size containers in cherry, strawberry, and banana. “Thanks Mom!” Rafe laughed when he looked in the fridge.
“You’re welcome,” I said. I did not mention the large container of the brand I preferred that was hidden in the back, behind two gallons of milk and the coffee creamer nobody uses.
But not to worry! When young men are hungry, they find what they need. I saw that particular container of yogurt in my other son’s hands. The next day. He was eating the last bits from it with a spoon.
Soon they’ll both be gone, one to Rome and one to Ireland, and I’ll be left with Dan, a quieter house, and probably an astonishing amount of yogurt.
There are times when love looks like feeding the people God has placed in front of you, even when they eat the thing you hid behind the milk. And there are times when love looks like letting them go, blessing the adventures ahead of them, and trusting that God will feed them in all the ways you no longer can.
With grace,
