“Why is this so awkward?”
A friend once said this to me about trying to pray with her husband. It’s fascinating that many of us find it awkward to pray together, and that’s because it really is an intimate thing to do. Most things are awkward when you do them for the first time, but the good news is that the more you do it, the more natural it will become. And praying together is one of the most beautiful, connecting things you can do as a couple.
Some Ways to Pray Together
There’s no right or wrong way to pray as a couple. Years ago, I had Alicia Hernon on my podcast, and she reminded us all that if you attend Mass with your husband, you are already praying together! I found that really encouraging. Some other ideas that might inspire you:
Pray a morning offering together before starting your day
Start a novena to a favorite saint
Pray together before going to bed, reflecting on your day and planning for the next
Share prayer intentions in a notebook you keep together
Also pray for him.
If you are married, your #1 job is getting your husband to heaven. Do you think about that? One of the most powerful ways you can support your husband and grow in your marriage is by praying for your husband. I sometimes hear from women whose husbands are reluctant to pray with them or who don’t share their faith, but this is something everyone can do. Make sure you are praying for your husband every day.
